ISO/TR 15608 Material Group 8.3

Material Group 8.3 ISO/TR 15608: Manganese-austenitic stainless steels such as XM-19 with
4 < Mn ≤ 12 % and Ni ≤ 35 %

Characteristics of Manganese-austenitic stainless steels acc. Material Group 8.3 ISO/TR 15608

In this material group 8.3, nickel has been replaced by manganese.
The purpose is to reduce the impact of nickel-price fluctuations on alloy surcharge. These grades also have complementary nitrogen additions, to further stabilise the austenitic phase and provide high-strength properties neccessary in certain applications. Cooper had also been successfully added, to provided austenite stabilisation and improve cold forming properties.

For example the austenitic stainless steel XM-19 has corrosion resistance greater than that provided by Types 316, 316L, plus approximately twice the yield strength at room temperature. In addition, XM-19 Stainless Steel has very good mechanical properties at both elevated and sub-zero temperatures. 

Weldability of Manganese-austenitic stainless steels acc. Material Group 8.3 ISO/TR 15608

The weldability is similar to that of Material group 8.1 ISO/TR 15608.

Applications of Manganese-Austenitic Stainless Steels such as alloy XM-19

Components using the combination of excellent corrosion resistance and high strength currently include pumps, valves and fittings, fasteners, pump shafting, heat exchanger and parts.
