Pressure-bearing components are such as pipe or system of pipes, tubing, fittings, expansion bellows, hoses.
Manufacture of components
Components can be manufactured with suitable materials in various ways, such as welding, bending, forming, with or without heat treatment. If this is not carried out by the pressure equipment manufacturer himself, it remains his responsibility to ensure that the manufactured component meets the requirements of the PED. Corresponding evidence including traceability must be requested and verified by the manufacturer.
Pressure bearing components could be main bearing parts
Pressure bearing components can also be classified as main pressure parts, e.g. a manually manufactured (by sub contractor) longitudinally welded tube for use as a shell of a pressure vessel. Here too, the pressure equipment manufacturer is responsible for ensuring that the component meets all the requirements of the PED including WPQR/WPQ for welds. In this case, for pressure equipments categories II, III and IV , all evidence should be provided by a specific certifcate 3.1 EN 10204
Pressure bearing components such as boltings
The bolting parts (screw, nut, stud, etc) are joining components and these parts can be pressure bearing components as well as main-pressure-bearing components, depending on the application. Bolts are not considered to be a main pressure bearing part unless its failure would result in a sudden discharge of pressure energy.
