The CE marking is an essential indication (but not proof) that a product complies with all applicable EU harmonisation legislation, e.g. Pressure Equipment Directive (PED) and ATEX Directive, and thus enables the free movement of goods.
The CE marking is a legally valid conformity marking and is neither a quality mark nor a marketing instrument.
Size and appearance
The CE marking shall consist of the initials ‘CE’ taking the following form. If the CE marking is reduced or enlarged, the proportions given in the graduated drawing shall be respected. The CE marking shall be at least 5 mm high.

The CE marking must be clearly visible, clearly legible and permanently affixed to the pressure equipment or to the name plate attached to it.
The manufacturing process for the CE marking is not prescribed. The manufacturer can produce it or have it produced using a wide variety of methods (embossing, etching, printing, stamping, casting, etc.) as long as he complies with the requirements regarding durability, legibility and minimum size.
Time and person responsible for affixing the CE marking
Only the manufacturer (or an authorized representative, if appointed) may affix the CE marking. The CE marking may only be affixed once the pressure equipment has been completed or is in a condition that allows the final inspection and the conformity assessment procedure has been completed.
The CE marking and the identification number of the notified body do not necessarily have to be affixed within the EU area. They can also be affixed in a third country if the pressure equipment is manufactured there and the notified body has carried out the conformity assessment in that country.
Marking of the identification number of involved notified body
The identification number only appears after the CE marking if the notified body was involved during the production phase. This is the case when modules A2, C2, D, D1, E, E1, F, G, H, H1 are used.
Pressure equipment in accordance with Article 4(3) of the Pressure Equipment Directive, designed and manufactured in accordance with sound engineering practice (SEP), must not bear the CE marking.
The CE marking and the identification number of the notified body do not necessarily have to be affixed within the EU. They can also be affixed in a third country if the pressure equipment is manufactured there and the notified body has carried out the conformity assessment in that country.
