The European industrial piping standards EN 13480 series are the European industrial piping code and specifying requirements for the design, construction, inspection and testing of industrial piping made from steels as well as additional materials such as aluminium, nickel, titan and copper.
The meaning of “industrial piping” is the following: Pipes or pipe networks located on the premises of an industrial site.
The following are excluded:
- Pipelines for waste water, and piping for waste water, the latter being directly evacuated via the sewer system outside of industrial premises and/or in the environment;
- Pipelines for gaseous fuels (that is to say any fuel that is in gaseous state at a temperature of 15 °C and at a pressure of 1 bar;
- Piping and pipelines for water for human consumption;
- Pipelines for petroleum and natural gas industries;
Overview of the EN 13480 series for metallic industrial piping
Standard | Title | Status | Remarks |
---|---|---|---|
EN 13480-1 | Metallic industrial piping – Part 1: General | harmonised | EN 13480-1 specifies the requirements for industrial piping systems and supports, including safety systems, made of metallic materials with a view to ensure safe operation. This European Standard is applicable to metallic piping above ground, ducted or buried, irrespective of pressure. |
EN 13480-2 | Metallic industrial piping – Part 2: Materials | harmonised | EN 13480-2 specifies the requirements for steel products used for industrial piping and supports. For some metallic materials other than steel, such as spheroidal graphite cast iron, aluminium, nickel, copper, titanium, requirements are or will be formulated in separate parts of this document. For metallic materials which are not covered by a harmonised material standard and are not likely to be in near future, specific rules are given in this part or the above cited parts of this document. |
EN 13480-3 | Metallic industrial piping – Part 3: Design and calculation | harmonised | EN 13480-3 specifies the design and calculation of industrial metallic piping systems, including supports, covered by EN 13480 series. |
EN 13480-4 | Metallic industrial piping – Part 4: Fabrication and installation | harmonised | EN 13480-4 specifies the requirements for fabrication and installation of piping systems, including supports, designed in accordance with EN 13480-3. |
EN 13480-5 | Metallic industrial piping – Part 5: Inspection and testing | harmonised | EN 13480-5 specifies the requirements for inspection and testing of industrial piping as specified in EN 13480-1 to be performed on individual spools or piping systems, including supports, designed in accordance with EN 13480-3 and EN 13480-6 (if applicable), and fabricated and installed in accordance with EN 13480-4. |
EN 13480-6 | Metallic industrial piping – Part 6: Additional requirements for buried piping | harmonised | EN 13480-6 specifies requirements for industrial piping either totally buried or partly buried and partly run in sleeves or similar protection. It is used in conjunction with the other six parts of EN 13480 series. Where buried piping subject to this standard connects to piping installed under other jurisdiction such as pipelines, the transition can be made at a closing element e.g. an isolating or regulating valve separating the two sections. This can be close to the boundary of the industrial site, but can be inside or outside the boundary. Operating temperature up to 75 °C. NOTE: For higher temperatures reference can be made to EN 13941-1 abut it is kept in mind, that CEN/TC 107 only deals with pre-insulated piping with temperatures up to 140 °C and diameters up to 800 mm, which is state of the art for these products. |
CEN/TR 13480-7 | Metallic industrial piping – Part 7: Guidance on the use of conformity assessment procedures | published | This Technical Report gives guidance on the use of conformity assessment procedures for industrial piping in relation to EN 13480. |
EN 13480-8 | Metallic industrial piping – Part 8: Additional requirements for aluminium and aluminium alloy piping | harmonised | This document specifies requirements for industrial piping systems made of aluminium and aluminium alloys in addition to the general requirements for industrial piping according to the series of standards EN 13480:2024 and CEN/TR 13480-7:2017. It specifies requirements for wrought products only. |
EN 13480-9 | Metallic industrial piping – Part 9: Additional requirements for nickel and nickel alloys piping | Under approval | EN 13480-9 specifies requirements for metallic industrial piping and their parts made of nickel and nickel alloys in addition to the general requirements for metallic industrial piping under EN 13480-1, EN 13480-2, EN 13480-3, EN 13480-4 and EN 13480-5. NOTE: Cast materials are not included in this part. Details regarding cast materials will be subject to an amendment to or a revision of this document. |
EN 13480-10 | Metallic industrial piping – Part 10: Additional requirements for piping of titanium and titanium alloys | Preliminary | |
EN 13480-11 | Metallic industrial piping — Part 11: Additional requirements for hydrogen application piping | Preliminary |
