BRASS

Copper-zinc alloys in ISO 15608 material group 32.1

Brass is an alloy of the metals copper and zinc. The common compounds contain a zinc content of five to 45 percent.  Copper and zinc mix optimally in the melt and remain evenly distributed in each other even during solidification. Brass is therefore a very homogeneous material. Brass metals are easy to cast and have a relatively low melting point.

In general excellent resistance to corrosion in seawater, industrial atmosphere and to stress corrosion cracking.

Weldability of Copper-zinc alloys

Low zinc brasses, less than 20% zinc, are shown to have good weldability using TIG welding. Preheating is not usually necessary, although preheats of up to 250°C (482°F) have been applied to thick-section material. Stress relieving temperature for weldments made in Red brass C23000: 230 °C (550 °F).

ISO 15614-1: Which range of material groups according to ISO 15608 are qualified?

What are designations for materials such as EN-Material No., Grade, AISI, or UNS?

Material Group 32.2

ISO 15608 Material Group 32.2:
Copper-zinc alloys, complex

BRASS

The “alpha-beta brasses”, “duplex brasses” or “hot working brasses”, usually contain between 38% and 42% zinc. In contrast to the alloys of the first group, their ability to be deformed at room temperature is more limited. They are, however, significantly more workable than the alpha brasses at elevated temperatures and can be extruded into bars of complex section, either solid or hollow, and hot forged in closed dies (“hot stamped”) to complex shapes.

Approximately 1% tin is included in the composition of alloys traditionally known as admiralty brasses (C44300) and naval brasses (nominally 60/40 types, C46400). As their names indicate, these brasses were developed originally for seawater service, the tin being added to provide improved corrosion resistance. Nowadays aluminum brasses nominally Cu/21-24% Zn/2-3.5% Al plus arsenic or cobalt, C68700) have replaced admiralty brass for marine service, although admiralty brass is used for fresh water. Naval brass retains some important applications in seawater service.

EN ISO 15608 Material Group 34:
Copper-nickel alloys

CUPRONICKEL

90-10 copper-nickel (CW352H), an alloy with 90% copper and 10% nickel, is the most commonly used alloy. It can be found in naval and commercial shipping, offshore oil and gas production as well as desalination and power generation. Alloys with 30% nickel content (CW353H and CW354H) and those which are more highly alloyed with aluminum, chromium or tin are used where greater resistance to seawater flow, sand abrasion, wear and galling, as well as higher mechanical properties, are required.

This material has a very high corrosion-resistance and has thermal stability. This material also exhibits a very high tolerance to corrosion cracking under stress and oxidation in a steam or moist air environment. Higher nickel content in this material will have improved corrosion resistance in seawater, and resistance to marine biological fouling.

Application for CUPRONICKEL

This material is typically found in marine equipment like sea water piping, valves, pumps and heat exchanger end plates and tubes. They materials are very well suited for applications in cryogenics as well as for other low-temperature applications in marine and off-shore technology or in liquefied natural gas (LNG) technology and plants.

Weldability of CUPRONICKEL

Copper nickel alloys are the most commonly used in welded fabrication projects. Phosphorus and sulphur levels in these alloys is less than 0.02% to ensure good welds. Most copper nickel alloys do not contain a deoxidizer. Therefore, fusion welding requires the addition of a deoxidized filler metal. This lowers the risk of porosity in the weld.

No preheating or post heating normally necessary. Interpass temperatures should be maintained below 65°C (150°F). Stress relieving temperature for welds 538 °C (1000 °F).

Copper-aluminium alloys

ALUMINIUM-BRONZES

The nickel aluminium bronze alloys are fairly complex materials and, during manufacture, require good control of the metal structure by attention to composition and heat treatment.

Features of Aluminium-Bronze

Nickel aluminium bronzes are available in both cast and wrought product forms and have a unique combination of properties:

  • Excellent wear and galling resistance
  • High strength
  • Density (10% lighter than steel)
  • Non-sparking
  • Low magnetic permeability (of <1.03 μ in selected grades)
  • High corrosion resistance
  • Good stress corrosion properties
  • Good cryogenic properties
  • High resistance to cavitation
  • Damping capacity twice that of steel
  • High resistance to biofouling
  • A protective oxide surface film which has the ability to self-repair.

Weldability of Aluminium-Bronze

The low electrical and thermal conductivity of aluminium-bronze alloys enhances their weldability. However, is it crucial to remove all of the aluminium oxide layer on the surface of the material before welding.

Preheat and interpass temperature depends on thickness of the part to be repaired. Normally the preheating temperature will be from 100 °C to 250 °C (212 °F to 480 °F). Where thickness of part is less than 20mm, preheating will normally not be required. Stress relieving temperature for welds made in Aluminium Bronze C61400: 340 °C (650 °F).

Material Group 41

EN ISO 15608 Material Group 41 such as Nickel 200:
Pure nickel

Unalloyed nickel with a nickel concentration of at least 99.2%. Alloy 201 is the low carbon version of Alloy 200.
They are characterised by:

  • excellent resistance in alkaline media,
  • high ductility in a wide temperature range,
  • ferromagnetism,
  • high electrical and thermal conductivity.

Applications for Pure Nickel

Nickel 200 is used in the chemical industry for its corrosion resistance – particularly to alkalis. Nickel is used in a wide range of applications for food preparation and cooking. Tanks in which fluorine is produced and where it reacts with hydrocarbon (CFC) due to the material’s resistance against fluorine. Storage and transport of phenol. Production of hydrogen chloride and chlorination of hydrocarbons such as benzene, methane and ethane.

Table: Typical materials

ISO 15608 groups materials according to their similar properties such as chemical composition, weldability and mechanical properties. However, it can also be used for other applications such as NDE, forming or heat treatments.

Material assigned to a group in ISO/TR 20172 (European Materials), ISO/TR 20173 (American Materials) and ISO/TR 20174 (Japanese Materials) should considered to those groups.

ISO 15608 material groups reduces the number of welding procedure qualifications (WPQR) e.g. ISO 15614-1. One WPQR is required for a single material group, whereby this material group can contain several specific materials (see tables below). For example, A WPQR with a material from subgroup 1.2 includes all materials from the subgroup 1.1

ISO 15608 is included in many codes and standards so that this simplification of welding qualifications can be used there e.g. EN 13445-2, EN 13480-2, AD 2000, PD 5500, EN 1092-2, ISO 9606.

ASME BPVC Section X has a similar group classification (P-number), but cannot be adopted 1:1. The American system similarly classifies materials into groups, however ASME BPVC Sect. IX in QW422 explicitly classifies grades of materials to groups and not on the chemical composition and mechanical properties such as is the case with ISO 15608.
