The EN 13445 series comprises European standards for unfired pressure vessel

The standards EN 13445 series are the European pressure vessel code and specifying requirements for the design, construction, inspection and testing of unfired pressure vessels made from steels and steel castings as well as additional materials such as cast iron, aluminium, nickel, titan and copper.

Overview of EN 13445 series

StandardTitelStatusRemarks
EN 13445-1Unfired pressure vessels – Part 1: Generalharmonised
(see current harmonised status)
This European Standard specifies the terms, quantities, symbols and units applicable to the EN 13445 series of standards. It also contains instructions for the application of the standard (Annex A) and an index covering the whole standard (Annex B). This information is intended to assist the user of the EN 13445 series of standards.
EN 13445-2Unfired pressure vessels – Part 2: Materialsharmonised
(see current harmonised status)
This European Standard specifies the requirements for materials (including cladding materials) for unfired pressure vessels according to EN 13445-1 made of metallic materials.
EN 13445-3Unfired pressure vessels – Part 3: Designharmonised
(see current harmonised status)
This European Standard specifies the requirements for the design of unfired pressure vessels according to EN 13445-1 and made of steels according to EN 13445-2. This part applies to the design and calculation of vessels before commissioning. It can also be used, with appropriate adaptations, for calculations or analytical verifications during operation.
EN 13445-4Unfired pressure vessels – Part 4: Fabricationharmonised
(see current harmonised status)
This European Standard specifies requirements for the fabrication of unfired pressure vessels and pressure vessel components made of steels, including their connections to non-pressure parts. It contains requirements for traceability of materials, manufacturing tolerances, welding requirements, requirements for non-welded permanent joints, work samples, forming requirements, heat treatment, repairs and finishing.
EN 13445-5Unfired pressure vessels – Part 5: Inspection and testingharmonised
(see current harmonised status)
This European Standard specifies the inspection and testing of steel pressure vessels manufactured individually and in series according to EN 13445-2 under predominantly non-dynamic loading (i.e. vessels with an equivalent number of full pressure cycles in service below 500). Specific requirements for service under cyclic loading are given in EN 13445-3 and Annex G of this part of the standard. Specific requirements for pressure vessels or pressure vessel components operating in the creep range are specified in Section 5, Section 6, Section 10, Annex H and Annex I.
EN 13445-6Unfired pressure vessels – Part 6: Requirements for the design and fabrication of pressure vessels and pressure parts constructed from spheroidal graphite cast ironharmonised
(see current harmonised status)
This European Standard specifies requirements for the design, materials, fabrication and testing of pressure vessels and pressure vessel components made of ferritic or austenitic spheroidal graphite cast iron intended for service with a maximum allowable pressure PS ≤ 100 bar and a maximum wall thickness of 60 mm. The limits for shell wall thickness do not apply to the thickness of flanges, reinforcements, cams and so on. Acceptable grades do not include ferritic and austenitic cast iron grades with lamellar graphite, which are specifically excluded from this European Standard due to their insufficient elongation and brittle fracture properties, as they require the use of different safety factors and a different approach.
CEN/CR 13445-7Guidance on the use of the conformity proceduresCEN ReportThis Technical Report gives guidance on the use of conformity assessment procedures for unfired pressure vessels as covered by Pressure Equipment Directive (PED). The PED requires all pressure equipment falling within its scope to have its design and manufacture assessed for conformity in accordance with a series of conformity assessment procedures. These procedures are described in detail in Annex III of the PED to which reference must be made in order to ensure compliance. The following summary is given for guidance purposes only.
EN 13445-8Unfired pressure vessels – Part 8: Additional requirements for pressure vessels of aluminium and aluminium alloysharmonised
(see current harmonised status)
This European Standard specifies, in addition to the general requirements for unfired pressure vessels according to EN 13445, Parts 1 to 5, requirements for unfired pressure vessels made of aluminum and aluminum alloys and their components. The standard applies to unfired pressure vessels for pressure loads up to 500 full load cycles
CEN/TR 13445-9Unfired pressure vessels – Part 9: Conformance of the EN 13445 series to ISO 16528CEN ReportThis CEN Technical Report details the conformance of the EN 13445 series for “Unfired pressure vessels” to ISO 16528-1 “Boilers and pressure vessels – Part 1: Performance requirements”.
This Technical Report applies to vessels of steel construction.
It is envisaged that future editions will include spheroidal graphite cast iron and aluminium vessels.
EN 13445-10Unfired pressure vessels – Part 10: Additional requirements for pressure vessels of nickel and nickel alloysharmonised
(see current harmonised status)
In addition to the general requirements for unfired pressure vessels according to EN 13445-1 to -5, this European Standard specifies requirements for unfired pressure vessels made of nickel and nickel alloys and their components.
EN 13445-11Unfired pressure vessels – Part 11: Additional requirements for pressure vessels of titanium and titanium alloysPublished
2024
In addition to the general requirements for unfired pressure vessels according to EN 13445:2014, parts 1 to 5, this European standard specifies requirements for pressure vessels and pressure vessel components made of titanium and titanium alloys.
EN 13445-12Unfired pressure vessels – Part 12: Additional requirements for pressure vessels of copper and copper alloysDraftIn addition to the general requirements for unfired pressure vessels according to EN 13445:2014, parts 1 to 5, this European standard specifies requirements for pressure vessels and pressure vessel components made of copper and copper alloys.
EN 13445-14Unfired pressure vessels – Part 14: Additional requirements for pressure equipment and pressure components fabricated with additive manufacturing methodsDraft
(see current)
This document specifies general requirements for the application of additive manufacturing processes for pressure vessels and parts. Separate Annexes of this document provide detailed requirements for specific additive manufacturing processes and materials. This document is currently limited to metallic material applications. If a pressure part manufactured to this document is integrated into a pressure vessel, all parts of EN 13445 apply for this integration.
EN 13445-15Part 15: Specific requirements for hydrogen applicationsPreliminaryThis Part specifies requirements for unfired pressure vessels and their parts made for hydrogen application in addition to the general requirements for unfired pressure vessels under EN 13445-1:2021, EN 13445-2:2021, EN 13445-3:2021, EN 13445-4:2021, EN 13445-5:2021, EN 13445-8:2021, EN 13445-10:2021 and EN 13445-11:2023;

This document distinguishes between four services/damage mechanisms, which might exist in combinations:
– Low temperature service;
– Hydrogen Environmental Embrittlement (HEE) or Hydrogen-induced cracking (HIC);
– High Temperature Hydrogen Attack (HTHA);
– Hydrogen service with cyclic loads (fatigue).
This document does not cover corrosion such as electro-chemical corrosion of metals under participation of hydrogen (e.g. sour gas).
