Weathering steels are listed in ISO 15608 material group 1.4 and are specified improved atmospheric corrosion resistance whose analysis may exceed the requirements for the single elements as indicated in the other groups (1.1, 1.2 and 1.3 see below)
What are weathering steels ISO 15608 material group 1.4?
Steels that are chemically formulated to develop a protective patina layer – rust-like in appearance – that eliminates the need for paint. The dense oxide patina layer of weathered steel seals it off from the atmosphere. If a steel panel is scratched, its patina will self-heal. The steel is only not protected against further corrosion: it also delivers a unique finish that is an aesthetically pleasing – a warm, dark-brown, textured appearance that needs low or no maintenance.
The key elements in weathering steels are small amounts of copper, chromium, nickel, silicon, and phosphorus. These elements, when exposed to alternating wet and dry conditions, develop the protective oxide layer – the weathering steel’s patina.
Weathering steels are easily weldable.
For unalloyed carbon steels with specified ReH ≤ 275 N/mm2: see Group 1.1
For unalloyed carbon steels with specified 275 < ReH ≤ 360 N/mm2: see Group 1.2
For unalloyed carbon steels with specified ReH > 360 N/mm2: see Group 1.3
